Main Functions and Effects
1.Providing Stability:
*Knee Joint: Prevents sudden knee flexion (giving way) during standing and walking through a locking knee hinge, providing support for weak or paralyzed quadriceps muscles.
*Ankle and foot: Controls foot drop (toe dragging), inversion, or eversion, providing a stable support surface.
2.Assisted Walking:
*Helps patients with lower limb muscle weakness (such as sequelae of poliomyelitis, spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, etc.) to stand and walk.
*Through special joint designs (such as "triplock locks," "pressure unlocking locks," or "adjustable angle locks"), it achieves the function of "locking during the standing phase and unlocking during the swing phase" in the gait cycle.
3.Correcting Deformities:
*Uses the three-point force principle to correct or maintain existing genu varum (bowlegs), genu valgum (knock-knees), ankle deformities, etc.
4.Load Reduction/Protection:
*Following fractures, ligament injuries, and joint surgery, KAFO immobilizes the knee and ankle joints, promotes healing, and allows for early weight-bearing with protection.
5.Control of Involuntary Movements:
*For spasticity and involuntary movements caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy, KAFO can inhibit and regulate movement patterns.
