Common Foot Health Issues and Solutions
I. Plantar Fasciitis (Heel Pain, Stabbing Sensation on Foot Strike)
Core Causes
Prolonged standing/sitting, wearing unsupportive shoes, and excessive exercise cause repeated strain and inflammation of the plantar fascia. The stabbing pain is most prominent when stepping out of bed in the morning or standing up after prolonged sitting.
Solutions
- Acute Phase (Within 72 Hours): Apply ice packs to the heel for 10-15 minutes, 3 times a day to reduce inflammation; for the chronic phase, soak feet in warm water for 10 minutes and then massage.
- Use a frozen mineral water bottle to roll under the sole of the foot slowly for 1-2 minutes to release tight fascia.
- Temporarily avoid climbing stairs, tiptoeing, and long-distance walking. Wear shoes with arch support and soft soles.
Long-Term Prevention
- Persist with calf stretches: Stand with one foot back, heel on the ground, knee straight, and lean forward to stretch the calf. 30 seconds per side, 3 sets daily.
- Choose shoes with a wide toe box, arch support, and heel height ≤3cm. Avoid flat canvas shoes and flip-flops.
- For people who sit for long periods, stand up and move every hour, and do tiptoe and foot flexion exercises to activate plantar muscles.
II. Foot Odor & Tinea Pedis (Athlete's Foot)
Core Causes
Excessive foot sweating and non-breathable socks/shoes lead to fungal growth (tinea pedis); sweat combines with surface bacteria on the skin, decomposes to produce odor (foot odor), and foot odor is often accompanied by tinea pedis.
Solutions
- Foot Odor: Soak feet in warm water mixed with white vinegar (ratio 1:10) for 10 minutes daily. Dry feet thoroughly and apply talcum powder/foot antiperspirant, focusing on the toe webs.
- Tinea Pedis (Peeling, Itching, Blisters): Clean feet with antifungal foot soak solution, then apply topical antifungal ointment. Do not pop blisters to avoid infection.
Long-Term Prevention
- Change socks and shoes daily. Choose cotton socks and breathable shoes. Rotate multiple pairs of shoes to allow full drying inside.
- Avoid walking barefoot on public bathroom or pool floors to prevent cross-infection. Use separate towels and slippers for personal use.
- For people with excessive sweating, place activated carbon insoles in shoes and replace them regularly.
III. Toenail Problems (Ingrown Toenail, Onychomycosis, Thickened Nails)
1. Ingrown Toenail (Nail grows into flesh, redness, swelling, pain)
Core Causes
Cutting toenails too short/sharp, wearing pointed shoes that squeeze the feet, and toenail trauma.
Emergency Relief
Apply iodophor to the swollen area to avoid pressure. Seek medical attention immediately if pus forms.
Key Prevention
Cut toenails straight across, do not trim the corners, and keep the nail length slightly beyond the nail bed. Avoid wearing pointed or tight shoes.
2. Onychomycosis (Yellow/Gray Nails, Thickening, Brittleness)
Core Causes
Fungi invade the nail bed, mostly caused by the spread of tinea pedis or infection after toenail trauma.
Home Care
Apply topical antifungal nail polish until new nails grow (cycle 3-6 months). Gently sand the nail surface with a nail file before application.
Key Prevention
Treat tinea pedis in a timely manner, avoid squeezing or bumping toenails, and regularly disinfect nail-cutting tools.
IV. Dry, Peeling Feet & Cracked Heels
Core Causes
Skin dehydration and low oil secretion, combined with walking friction, hot water foot soaking, and frequent use of strong-cleansing soap, lead to thickened cuticle and cracking on the feet.
